No one, at least that I know, likes to clean their grout.

One of the keys to keeping grout clean is to clean it regularly, so that stains do not seep down into the pores where it is harder to remove.

Fortunately, you can use the recipes below to clean your grout easily, so you are more likely to do it on a semi-regular basis.

Of course with any method for cleaning grout some elbow grease is required.

So grab that old toothbrush (or one of the grout cleaning brushes recommended below) and whip up these recipes to get that grout clean.

Baking Soda Grout Cleaner

Ingredients:

Directions:

Mix ingredients in a bowl to make a paste and apply to the grout with an old toothbrush or a grout cleaning brush, scrubbing the grout to remove dirt.

Using an old toothbrush is a great way to reuse an item you would otherwise throw away, so it is both a frugal and green option.

The disadvantage of an old toothbrush is that it may be so used it is soft, meaning that it does not scrub the grout as well.

For really tough grout cleaning jobs I suggest a grout cleaning brush, like one of the ones pictured below to help your homemade grout cleaners work their best.

Bleach Out The Stains Grout Cleaner

This recipe for grout cleaner can be useful when mold or mildew has left stains on your grout, even after you have killed the fungus with a homemade mildew cleaner.

Ingredients:

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients together in a gallon bucket and then scrubbing the solution onto your grout with an old toothbrush or grout brush.

Allow the solution to sit on the grout for a couple of minutes to allow the chlorine bleach to work and bleach out the stains, but do not allow it to dry.

Scrub more with the brush if needed.

Then, rinse with cool water to remove the chlorine bleach solution.

Hint: This homemade grout cleaner may bleach out colored grouts, so first test in an inconspicuous area before using on any grout that is not white.
