How To Remove Ketchup Stains: Tips & Home Remedies

by Taylor @Stain-Removal-101.com

Here are some tips I've collected on how to remove ketchup stains from clothes and carpet, two of the most common places you can accidentally spill this condiment.

The thing to remember about treating these stains is that it is best to deal with them as soon as possible after they occur, if it all possible, because they can set quite quickly (just like all tomato based stains do).

The good thing is that there are lots of possible ways to remove these stains. So, although I've found many ways listed below in these videos there are lots of other valid techniques and methods out there. If you know of another way I'd love to hear it. You can share your tips for removing ketchup stains here, or read other tips that have already been submitted, including reviews of products that readers have found work well for removing stains from ketchup.

This page is focused on home remedies for removing these stains, along with the techniques you need to employ. So, without further ado, find out how to remove ketchup stains from surfaces in your home below.

Remove Ketchup Stain From Clothes - Video And Written Instructions

Here's the first video for removing ketchup stains from clothes.

It suggests five different methods for removal, including:

1. Soaking in cold water from 1 hour, to overnight (depending on how old the stain is).

2. Pretreat with a dishwashing liquid solution.

3. Wash with the hottest water the fabric will allow.

4. Treat with an ammonia and water solution (first test this solution in an inconspicuous area to test for color fastness).

5. Create a paste of unseasoned meat tenderizer and water to use as a stain remover.

(This paste contains enzymes to break down proteins in the ketchup stain. If you don't have meat tenderizer you can use a liquid laundry detergent containing enzymes.)

There are even more videos below with alternate method for removing these stains.

Removing Catsup Stains From Clothes Without Chlorine Bleach

Try Not To Spill Catsup On Your Clothes!

Try Not To Spill Catsup On Your Clothes!

It is possible to remove catsup stains from clothing without using chlorine bleach, which is a substance some people like to avoid using in their laundry.

Below is a video which gives suggestions and tips for catsup stain removal.

These steps include using cold water, liquid laundry detergent, baking soda and vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen bleaches, and even good old hot water in the washing machine to remove these stains.

These suggestions may sound a bit familiar to the video above, but I guess that is just because trying to figure out how to remove ketchup stains have found that they actually work!

Removal Of Ketchup Stains From Carpet - Video And Instructions

Finally, here is a video showing tips and techniques for removal of ketchup stains from carpet.

This video suggests to use a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of a mild non bleaching detergent, without color, such as a "free and clear detergent," and a liter of cold water.

This is a similar carpet cleaning solution as what is suggested by Stain-Removal-101 in my ketchup stain removal instructions.

I like this video because it shows some good techniques for removing stains from your carpet, including scraping off the excess ketchup with a blunt knife, and how to blot the cleaning solution into the carpet, without spreading the stain.

I hope these videos have helped you learn how to remove ketchup stains from various surfaces in your home.

Do you have another home remedy or homemade stain removing solution that you use, that you didn't see listed already? Or do you have great success with a particular type of commercial stain remover? I'd love it if you share your tips and ideas with me here, or you can read even more tips that have already been submitted.

what about when the stain has gone through the dryer?
by: Jen Mous

I have an outfit of my daughters that had ketchup on it and didn't notice until I was putting it away (it was put through the dryer). Is there any method or anything that may work short of the outfit being trashed? I am so mad at myself as I always go through all the kids clothes and pretreat any or everything.

response re question of dried stain - my suggestion, presoaking
by: Taylor

Hi Jen! Yes, you're absolutely right that once a stain has gone through the dryer it is much more difficult to remove, however, it is not necessarily impossible. I've found if it would be trashed anyway, if the stain can't be removed, it gives me permission to try something a bit harsher and if it doesn't work, oh well, because it was ruined already. On the other hand, sometimes I'm happily surprised I was able to remove a stain and it didn't harm the fabric. In this instance I would suggest you do a long presoak, with either Oxiclean or Biz, or a similar product. (Click the link for my article all about presoaking, which will give you more information.) Presoaking is one of the best ways, I've found, to sometimes remove these set in stains.
