Kirkland Environmentally Friendly Laundry Detergent (From Costco) Review
by Crystal
(Illinois)
Here's a review of Kirkland Environmentally Friendly laundry detergent.
Crystal says:
I have 4 kids who are heavily involved with sports. I do 4-5 loads of laundry a day and love the Kirkland brand detergent from Costco (I use the
HE variety). It's inexpensive and works great!
Taylor says:
Thanks Crystal for sharing your review.
It is always great to find a product that works well, and is inexpensive.
Has anyone else tried this brand of detergent? If so, I would love to hear your thoughts about it in the comments. Have you had similar results to Crystal?
In addition, I tried to research the detergent more, since it does claim to be environmentally friendly, but couldn't find out much about this claim. Does anyone have any thoughts or information about this aspect of the product?

This Eco Friendly Laundry Soap Left Residue In My Washer Tub
by SR101 Reader
SR101 Reader says:
I just purchased and used Kirkland Environmentally Responsible Laundry Detergent. It left a greasy residue ring around my washer tub.
This does not make me feel confident in using this product because if there is residue around my washer tub then there is residue in the clothes and bedding as well.
I will go back to
Arm & Hammer detergent which does not leave any residue in my washer.
Taylor says:
Thanks for sharing your experience with me.
I am wondering, has anyone else experienced this problem when using this detergent? I'd love to hear your experience good or bad. You can
share your laundry detergent review here for this or any other brand, telling me what you like, or don't, about it and why.

Makes My Fabrics Smell - Switching Back To Old Brand
by K Brierley
(BC, Canada)
This detergent makes all my polyester blends smell like musty bread and wet dog (combined). It is literally making me sick.
It may be partly a reaction the detergent is having with the fabric (yikes!) in combo with the soft water here, in any case, I'm definitely switching back to Ecos' brand "magnolia and lily" scented detergent.
I don't know why we ever switched, that stuff is great!

My Free & Clear Costco Detergent Has Been Replaced With This "Green" Product
by Bonnir
(California)
Bonnir shared her experience with the environmentally friendly version of Costco's detergent.
Bonnir says:
I've been buying and loving
Kirkland Free and Clear laundry detergent for many years.
Last time I went to purchase it, at my local Torrance CA Costco no longer carried it...they have changed to a "green" Kirkland product which now has a strong scent similar to
Tide.
I can't handle the smell, my clothes no longer come out soft and detergent-free, and I have developed a rash.
I don't see how this can be more environmentally friendly that the Free and Clear.
I'm taking it back...do not purchase this thinking it's just new packaging and name!
Taylor says:
Sorry to hear about your
allergic reaction to laundry detergent Bonnir.
If they no longer carry the free and clear version of the Costco laundry detergent in your Costco, I would suggest trying to find a new
hypoallergenic laundry detergent for you and your family. You can check out my article from the link provided, which gives reviews of various brands from other readers so you can find one that will work well for your whole family.

Kirkland Environmentally Friendly Laundry Detergent Is The Best
by Jenn B
(Henderson, NV)
Jenn has shared what she believes is the best laundry detergent.
Jenn says:
I switched to this detergent about 3 years ago & haven't looked back.
I was hesitant at first because most of the Eco-friendly detergents I have tried in the past have not cleaned very well. I have 3 Boys so I need a detergent that really gets the grime out & this does not disappoint!
I love the very light scent because I easily get headaches from soaps that are too strongly scented.
I also love the price, $13 for 120 loads is hard to find & when they put out their coupon for $2.50 off, that makes it quite the steal!
Taylor says:
Thanks Jenn for sharing your review of this Kirkland brand laundry soap.
In the previous review from Crystal, I said I wasn't able to find out much information about the ingredients of this detergent, to evaluate its claims of being environmentally friendly.
Since then I've learned more about it. Actually, Jenn provided me a link to a page about this detergent, which lead me to find this
Costco Connection Magazine article from August 2008, which discusses this laundry supply, and tells more about its eco-friendly characteristics. It says:
These new products feature biodegradable cleaning agents and plant-based formulas; contain no phosphates, dyes, optical brighteners or bleaches; are safe for septic systems; and are not animal tested.
That helps answer some questions about whether it is really a
green cleaning supply.
The cost of this product is much lower than many other eco-friendly alternatives, which is good since it can be expensive if you want to buy something instead of making your own
homemade laundry detergent. I'm definitely going to be checking this Kirkland brand out now that I've gotten several positive reviews of it.
