Seventh Generation cleaning products come in many varieties and scents, including some with plant based disinfectants.
Read reviews to see how these products work in people's homes, and also more information about the environmental friendliness of these products.
What first intrigued me about Seventh Generation is the origin of its company name.
The name comes from a saying from an Iroquois tribe's ancient document, which states, "in our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." I just love that saying, and it truly summarizes what ecologically friendly thinking should be about.
At first, when this company was in its younger years, it was rather obscure, but now almost everywhere I look in stores I see more and more of their products. Although you are still more likely to find them in natural food stores, I have started seeing the products in larger stores like Walmart and Target too, and they are also very easy to find online.
The company makes personal care, baby, paper and household supplies, feminine care products, and also laundry supplies, along with cleaning supplies, although this article is focused on the latter.
As explained in more detail in my green cleaning supplies article, there is no hard and fast definition of what is "eco-friendly," or "green" or even "natural." That means some companies can make some pretty broad claims, and have a lot of wiggle room to argue about whether they are really true or not.
One of the things I really like about Seventh Generation products is the fact that they disclose all of the ingredients in all of their products, which is not something they are required to do. Basically, they don't hide behind empty words, but instead you could say the "proof is in the pudding," because anyone can evaluate and determine how green their products really are by looking at this ingredient list.
As with many other green cleaners, they use many plant derived and natural ingredients in their formulas. They also completely eschew chlorine bleach, which means that their diapers and feminine care products are actually brown, because they don't bleach them.
There is a large selection of products with very pleasant essential oil scents to choose from, along with a large selection of "free and clear" products for those who do not like a scent.
Finally, one of the biggest innovations is their use of botanicals, derived from essential oils (much of it from thyme oil), to make disinfecting cleaners. This is revolutionary. In the past, whenever you wanted a product that disinfects, you relied on chlorine bleach based products, or other man-made harsh chemicals. This is a new way of disinfecting which is much more natural, and is very helpful for places like the bathroom and kitchen where disinfection is important for health and sanitation.
As I've discussed with all of the Earth friendly cleaning products I have evaluated on this site, it doesn't matter how safe a product is for the environment or your health if it doesn't clean well. Practically, no one will use it unless it works.
That is why I've collected reviews from readers (see below), to share with you to find out how well these various cleaning supplies work. I am always looking for more reviews and experiences with these products though, so please skip down to share your own review here if you've used one of these products yourself, and have liked (or disliked) it.
For ease of organization, and also to explain what products are available, whether or not I've collected a review for it yet or not, I've separated the products out into various categories, based on what area of your home they are designed to clean.
There is a whole range of Seventh Generation cleaning products which can be used throughout your home. These include general or all purpose cleaner, glass and surface cleaner, disinfecting multi-surface cleaner and disinfecting wipes.
